  Breastfeeding and You

How to make Breastfeeding work for You.

Ensure uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact as soon as possible after birth.
Get the Positioning of the baby and the Attachment to the breast correct from the start. This will:

-   reduce the risk of mum developing sore nipples, engorgement, blocked ducts, mastitis
-   ensure baby gets a satisfying feed
-   ensure a good milk supply
Position your baby close to you, bring baby's nose to nipple, head and body aligned leaving the head free to tilt back.
You have achieved good Attachment when:

-   baby's mouth is wide open and cheeks are rounded
-   there is less areola visible below baby's bottom lip than above top lip
-   baby's chin is touching breast and the nose is free
-   baby is contented at the breast and you should hear deep sucks with swallows
-   feeding is pain free
